Ashtanga yoga is a type of yoga that follows the same specific asanas in the same sequence, every single time.
To me, it is boring and I do not care for it at all. Other yogis love it. LOVE IT! Why? It is a routine that they can make progress on, and see the progress. If you only ever do these specific 26 poses. You will see, daily how you are or are not "improving" They also say you can go into "autopilot" and get a more meditative state out of your yoga practice. Here's more info on Ashtanga, created by Jois. Years ago, for basically 12 year old boys to burn off some of their energy. lol. This page explains a lot about Ashtanga, and even has a PDF and a MP3 for you to give it a try. Why not? Make your own decisions about this popular practice. Just because it's not my cup of tea, doesn't mean it won't be yours. Enjoy and tell me what you think of Ashtanga. http://www.ashtangayoga.info/practice/

In a yoga class I am a big proponent of watching what you say as the instructor. Outside of a yoga class, you'd be hard pressed to "offend" me with your words, poorly chosen or not.
In class, I listen carefully to every little word that comes out of my teacher's mouth. And yes, sometimes I don't like what I hear. Though a few of these examples do not bother me at all from the link below, I can see how they may irritate someone. Especially the "if you need a block" or "weight loss" references. Read it and tell me your thoughts. I am curious. https://yogainternational.com/article/view/six-things-i-dont-say-in-yoga-class-anymore?utm_content=buffera2c99&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer There's so much good to yoga. It makes complete sense that yoga is good for the feet. So many standing and balance poses. It just goes hand in hand. Or shall I say foot in foot?
I'm gonna tell you something personal. I have a bunion. It is not pretty. I have had it for years, on my left foot. Sometimes it hurts, and I mean a lot of pain. My mother had one, (some swear it's hereditary, but shoes and lifestyle play into it too). She had the surgery to remove it many years ago. She said the recovery was horrifically painful. Everyone I know that has had this "bunionectomy" has said the exact same thing. Uber painful, and that they would NEVER do it again. So I started working my feet a bit more in my yoga practice. I massage my own feet several times a week. It makes a big difference. The added plust to all of this is that my yoga practice got easier. As my foundation was stronger, via my stronger feet. My conncetion to my mat is superb, because I think about it and work it every time I am on the mat. The link below has many great suggestions to healthier feet. Don't wait until you actually have foot pain to do these simple moves. Foot pain, as with all pain, basically sucks. So let us avoid this entirely. https://yogainternational.com/article/view/9-poses-to-prevent-bunions-relieve-bunion-pain?utm_source=Yoga+International&utm_campaign=85abd71072-basic-member-welcome-series43&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_943c6d823b-85abd71072-88357453&goal=0_943c6d823b-85abd71072-88357453&mc_cid=85abd71072&mc_eid=69590e27e9 Most people have never even herd of the posts. It's an important muscle to know and understand. http://www.ekhartyoga.com/blog/stretching-your-stress-out-meet-your-psoas
Our Yoga Alliance Approved School (RYS-200) is having a three week intensive training in Sayulita, Mexico. Enjoy this lovely little hippie town and expand your yoga all at the same time. After successful completion of the training, you may register with the Yoga Alliance if you wish as a RYT-200. This is a substantial certificate.
Many current yoga teachers around the world have never taken this intense and awesome course, but they certainly should. Always ask your teacher if they sucessfully completed a YA RYT-200 Certified course. You'd be surprised how many have not. This may be why their practices do not flow well. You will learn how to create classes that are fun, safe and effective. They will flow, and flow well. Your students will be happy to have you as their teacher. Here's a link so that you can familiarize yourself with Sayulita a little better. Just 45 minutes by a 35 peso bus from the Puerto Vallarta International Airport is this eclectic surf village of joy and love. It's a great place to live or vacation, to surf or as a hub for many other travel adventures. Meet people from all over the world. Make new friends. Live a little mas! Any questions? email us from the "contacts" page. We'd love to hear from you. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g445056-Sayulita_Pacific_Coast-Vacations.html Watch this short video on the damage of texting to the neck. Take a look at each other when you are out and about. Look and see how practically everyone is on their phone, tablet, or computer. I mean if you are just sitting at a coffee shop drinking your coffee, doing nothing, people may think you are a nut-job.
Can a teenage girl eat a piece of cheesecake without tweeting about it? I don't think so... This can be a problem for sure, but let's take it to the mat. To the yoga practice. We need good range of motion "ROM" in all our body. This is extremely important for inversions such as headstand. If you are having signs and symptoms of "text neck" I suggest you don't try headstand until you get your ROM and posture back to a healthy state. Putting more weight on your head when your neck is so out of alignment cannot be a good idea. http://www.hlntv.com/shows/the-daily-share/articles/2015/10/08/textneck-how-texting-can-be-harmful-to-your-health Lower back pain, Sciatica and pain in the Butt:
Take a look at this picture of the Accupressure spots of the low back and buttock. You can use tennis balls, (that's what we do here at Yoga Maya in some of our more theraputic classes) your fists or thumbs to apply inward, steady firm pressure for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the pain dissipates, make sure you breathe deeply and that it does not cause too much discomfort. You may repeat 3 times a day. Never press right over the spine. Try to do this yourself with the tennis balls. It will give you a great idea of exactly where these spots are and where your pain is too. Always consult a doctor about your medical problems. Take a look at the picture below. These are the lines in the body that the CHI flows. When we hold poses for 3 minutes, it really helps to open up the body. Allowing for energy to flow freely. Get to a Yin Yoga Class, and enjoy the wonderful benefits of a healty body.
Yoga Maya offers Yin every Thursday eve, at 6:00 pm in Sayulita, Mexico. There are three basic types of people, according to the Ayurvedic system of health and well being. This is a type of medicine that has been around for thousands of years. Of course most people are a combination of two or even all three dosas. This is a very interesting way of looking at who you are, why you like, what you like and finally; why you don't like what it is you do not like! Take the quick quiz and see what dosha(s) you are.
The three Doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each have their own unique qualities. Have fun figuring out what you are and then take a look at your friends, coworkers and family. What do you think they are? Enjoy! http://doshaquiz.chopra.com In my never ending search for more information on Pranayama, I came across this wonderful and super long youtube audio/video of Tibetan Bowl Music for 11+ hours. It's great to just listen to or to mask undesireable noise while you are trying to meditate or practice pranayama.
Enjoy my lovely yogis! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5dU6serXkg |
